Abstract
With the objective of comparing the equations of Cockcroft - Gault (CG) and Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD) with the usual formula for the estimation of the glomerular filtration rate (IFG), in patients with chronic kidney disease in stages III and IV, from the University Hospital “Antonio Patricio de Alcalá”, Cumaná, Sucre State, the anthropometric variables were evaluated, as well as serum creatinine concentrations, in 60 patients of both sexes, aged between 18 to 84 years old. With these results it was obtained that CG presented the highest sensitivity (86.7%) and effectiveness (90%), while specificity was similar to both equations (CG and MDRD = 100.0%). Using the Person’s correlation coefficient, CG showed a greater correlation(r = 0.63) to estimate IFG than the equation of MDRD (r = 0.59). An analysis of variance (ANOVA) indicated that there are significant differences (p < 0.0001) between CG and MDRD equations with respect to the age. The equation of CG has greater correlation with the usual formula to estimate IFG, resulting that the equation of CG is a reliable, economic, simple and applicable method in the clinical laboratories.
Key words: Estimated glomerular filtration rate, creatinine, chronic kidney disease.
