ABSTRACT
The Passifloras have been addressed mainly based on morphological characters. However, recent studies have shown the presence of anatomical features of potential usefulness. The morphology and anatomy of the stem in primary growth of Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa Degener; P. quadrangularis L. and P. ligularis Juss, was studied to know the stem characters of each species for a comparative analysis between them. The samples were collected from the end of branches from plants grown in the greenhouse (Universidad de Oriente, Núcleo Monagas), Juanico Campus, located in the city of Maturin, Monagas state, Venezuela. The morphological study was conducted from five plants (207 days) of each species. For the anatomical study conventional techniques were used. The morphology of the three species showed similarities in: presence of anthocyanin and pubescence on the stem and tendrils; differences in the form of the stem; distance between knots; stem diameter; distance from the earring; length and diameter of the spiral. The epidermis is a monostratified and glabrous; the cortex is formed by several layers of collenchyma and behind these there are several layers of parenchyma, differing in the number of layers of cells in each species. The medullar parenchyma was reduced in P. edulis, but abundant and homogeneous in P. ligularis and P. quadrangularis, with druses and crystals in the cortex, phloem, xylem and pith. The primary vascular tissues were arranged in open collateral bundles in the latter species, the vascular cambium is formed by a distinct number of cell layers for each species.
Key words: Caulinares characters, Passifloras.
