ABSTRACT

Comments are presented and ideas are complemented from a recent article published in the journal Saber [Saber. 30:5-13, 2018], about the taxonomy and systematic of the eukaryotic-ciliate microorganism Balantioides coli (Malmsten, 1857) (= Paramecium coli, Balantidium coli, Neobalantidium coli Pomajbíková et al. 2013) (Litostomatea: Vestibuliferida, Balantidiidae), causal agent of balantiosis (formerly balantidiosis), a zoonotic enteric parasitic disease that affects humans. Balantioides coli was previously described within the genera Paramecium Müller, 1773, Balantidium Claparède & Lachmann, 1858 and Neobalantidium Pomajbíková et al. 2013, and phylogenetically related to protozoa. Nevertheless, more recent phylogenetic studies with ultraestructural, molecular, culturing and bioinformatic tools, suggest that this species conforms a different group (homeothermic clade) erected as Balantioides Alexeieff, 1931 (formerly Neobalantidium Pomajbíková et al. 2013) with those “Balantidium spp.” taxa parasitizing warm-blooded vertebrates, and possess a closer relationship with the members of the kingdom Chromista, or with Alveolata group or super group SAR (Stramenopiles+Alveolates+Rhizaria). The need for homogenizing taxonomic and systematic nomenclatures of B. coli and the parasitic disease that causes (balantiosis), is highlighted.

KEY WORDS: Eukaryota, taxonomy, systematic, intestinal parasitosis.
