ABSTRACT
The Neverí river is one of the main water reserves of the North-eastern region of Venezuela. Currently, the increase of activities associated to urban development, industrialization and illegal occupations of land, have affected its environmental quality due to the improper disposal or wrong management of the wastes and effluent discharges. The objective of this research was to evaluate the microbial activity in the surface sediments of the terminal portion of the Neverí river low basin, through the determination of the dehydrogenase activity (DHS) and the fluorescein diacetate hydrolysis (HDAF). The research was conducted in the following sampling stations: Caracas bridge, neighborhood Fernández Padilla and the Neverí river mouth. We analyzed the surface sediments (0-10 cm) of the river during the rainy and dry seasons of 2011. The DHS activity and the HDAF were higher in the dry season (62.32 to 178.87 µg de TFF g-1 24h-1 and 229.6 to 317.96 µg de fluorescein g-1 24h-1, respectively). The highest activity of these parameters was recorded on the right river bank, in the neighborhood Fernández Padilla and the mouth of the river, which could be associated to the greater contribution of organic matter from anthropogenic sources and from the mangrove forests and submerged vegetation in these zones.
Key word: Dehydrogenase activity, microbial activity, fluorescein diacetate hydrolisys, Neveri river, surficial sediments.
